A FORMER INTRODUCTION TO THE BOEVL-NETWORK
At the visit of a lithuanian delegation in the workshop of Noerre Djurs Web-& Computer-Boevl-miljoe in august 1999 the following introduction to the Boevl-network was given:

The Key – or How it all started.

- An introduction to The Computer-problem-solving network of Noerre Djurs -

by Bjarke Nielsen * Bjarke@nr-djurs.net * http://www.nr-djurs.net

As a teacher learning adults EDB in the evening on public schools in the early 90.th, I was often asked to arrange meetings where people could bring their own computers and get my help to make them work properly. I knew from my own experience, that this kind of EDB-problem-solving-meetings could not be expected to have solved all the problems people would bring, by ordinary closing time for evening schools, - so at first I could not imagine where to arrange such meetings. But then a friend who needed help found a place where people could come for free, and yet stay as long as necessary. So the 17.th of June 1993 I posted an invitation for a public and free Computer-Boevl-night once a month to all those who had asked me for such a EDB-problem-solving-meeting. In this way the first Computer-Boevl-night held on Thursday the 24.th of June 1993, became the birth of The Computer-problem-solving-network of Noerre Djurs as you are going to hear about. 14 people with their own computers met at that first meeting and we tinkered with the gear all night, and a lot of problems were solved, so Friday morning - in the end of this first meeting - we very satisfied agreed to meet again at the same place on the last Thursday next month. At the meeting in the next month a few more people met with their gear, and we could see that we needed more room, and as it also this time became morning before we stopped, we agreed that the last Friday evening in every month would be better, as most people don’t have to go to work at Saturday.

As a EDB-teacher I was responsible for the EDB-room at one of the schools, and I needed to go there on odd times to repair the gear, so I asked the school-leader and the school-director of this community to get a key for this. I got a key and some (reasonable) time after, I asked him and the school-leader to let me arrange the monthly Computer-Boevl-nights in the EDB-room, and they let it have a try. We moved the arrangement and month after month still more people with computer-boevl heard about it and came along with their gear, and before long we had to use the whole school, and we had to start every arrangement with an organising plenary meeting, to get an overview of who needed help with their gear, and who at the meeting were able to help them, so that all the problems could be taken care of after the plenum and solved simultaneously. You see, Cola has become the strongest drink at Boevl-nights, and yet - due to the release of frustration the problem-solving gives - the atmosphere is simply like party-time.

Time went by and the Computer-Boevl-nights generated a network between the computer-users of this area. By summer 1995 we knew in this network that the Internet had come to stay, so in the autumn I arranged a course where about 25 people studied the Internet. It was prolonged two times and lasted until summer 1996. We found that as much as the Internet was interesting it also was scaring, that it might take even more of peoples leisure time than the national TV-stations already did. TV already meant a threat to the necessary involvement in organising our own local life. A media more where people each on their own would use their spare time to look to the other side of the world, instead of making solutions here and now in their own lives together, is really scaring. We saw it also as a problem that - as we figured it - in the end, our local community would have to buy some big town centred Internet-designers to make a presentation of our area. Not having their feet in the shoes of the people of this area, we felt that they never could know where the shoes had to be changed – in other words they would only be able to come up with a useless "plastic"-presentation of life in our area. This was much of the reason why we by summer 1996 started to organise to get a user-controlled Internet-server for the Noerre Djurs-area. Our goal was to counter-act the mentioned threats by making a democratic user controlled electronic community centre for our own area on the Internet, and to convince the local people who gets access to the Internet to contribute to its relevance, and to make it their personal and common entrance to the Internet – from where of course they can go on to everywhere on the global Internet. In this way we are building a local electronic network on the unavoidable Internet, to make it a tools of building our own local society in the real world. We use another thorn to remove the one that else make us limp. Everyone must get homepage and e-mail account for free.

Based on the generated goodwill over time we started to obtain financial support from the local community in the summer of 1996 and from the government in the beginning of 1998, and today the Computer-Boevl-network of Noerre Djurs runs Noerre Djurs Web on our own Internet-server the way we wanted to. Based on about 40 volunteers we also run The Boevl-telephone hotline where everybody can call and get help with IT-problems, and also The Boevl-workshop in Noerre Djurs Hallen with Internet-access from 12 PC’s. Besides the monthly Boevl-night we here have a lot of activities. Every Tuesday at 9.30 to 11.30 all elderly people are welcome to IT-workshop, at 16.00 to 19.00 everybody are welcome to Game- and Internet-Café and at 19.00 until 22.00 we have an open IT-workshop. Every Thursday at 19.00 to 22.00 everybody can participate in making material for the web-site. And the first Friday and the second last Friday of each month people can attend a night-long Game- and Internet-Café. At the 1. Monday evening each month we have an all-co-ordinating meeting where every citizen on a democratic basis can influence all the activities. Similar on the 2. Monday the subject is the web-site and on the 3. Monday the subject is the workshop and on the 4. Monday the subject is supporting 15 workshops we have helped to establish in Kazakstan and Lithuania. The 1. Wednesday each month people can attend a theme-evening. The newest step is that 4 to 5 persons work in the workshop in the daytime waged by the community. The staff can be reached at the workshop Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 16.00. They produce the local daily news on the web-site and also the elderly people and people with disabilities can call and ask them to come and give support in there home.

A COMPELLING IDEA AROSE

At this meeting the idea of making similar networks in differnet parts of Lithuania was born, and the coordinator of the Boevl-network of Noerre Djurs was asked to help finding second hand IT-gear, - as bying equipment was not an option, due to the lithuanian economy.

HOW TO DO IT
When the lithuanian delegation had come back home, its coordinator asked the danish coordinator for guidance about how to structure a computer-problem solving-network. As a response the Lithuanians recieved the following document:

The workings of a Computer-problem-solving network

By Bjarke Nielsen * Bjarke@nr-djurs.net * http://www.nr-djurs.net

The basic concept is - on a friendly and non-commercial basis - to get together and in a practical manner tap the gathered experience and knowledge in solving each ones problems in installation and handling a computer in any way.

To be able to solve the problems concrete, some circumstances has to be met. Ideally it should be more or less like this:

  1. The place
  2. It will be necessary to get a place to gather, with room enough for everybody interested and their computer-gear. The place should have the necessary facilities like enough electricity, heating, toilets, tables and chairs and should of course be all right for the purpose in the eyes of the authorities. Also a telephone line to connect to the Internet would be valuable. And it would be nice sooner or later to get hold of the place on a full time basis and to have some stationary computer-gear at the place, so that those who haven’t got their own, can benefit from attending the arrangements at the place. Also with enough stationary computers at the place, it can be used for computer-classes, coming from schools, institutions, firms and authorities. The economy behind the place can be build upon this concept of computer-classes.

  3. For everybody
  4. To attend the Computer-problem-solving gatherings should be for free or as cheap as it can get. Everybody should be welcome !, - so those who takes the initiative should be careful to continuously keep the workshop and the network of people open for everyone. This is done by on the one hand: involving everyone who cares, in the decision process that forms the evolution of the network, by regular open democratic meetings. Everybody should know about these meetings and should be welcome, and everybody should be able to get items on the agenda down to the last minute. And on the other hand it is important not to let the network form as any kind of closed circle involving membership or anything alike. Everybody in the local community has to be a latent participant (member) of the problem-solving network by sheer citizenship !

  5. Regular meeting-plan
  6. So that everything doesn’t have to be arranged over and over again (sending out letters or calling each time, etc.) it is very important to keep a regular and predictable schedule. The meetings should be kept at the same place on the same day - for instance each month or week – and at the same time, and preferably by the same meeting leader. In this way the local people and everybody involved can know long time ahead what, where, when and by whom, and in this way arrange their activities accordingly – with out having to ask for each time.

  7. Prolonged meetings
  8. It has to be possible to stay at the place after normal closing time in the night, as solving computer-problems often is very time consuming. And often it can only be done in one whole and uninterrupted session. For this reason it is necessary to arrange the gatherings in the evening the day before a day where people normally don’t have to go to work early in the morning. Also it has to be know how long one can stay at the place. It has to be possible to get something to drink and eat during the night, and as people tend not to care for themselves ahead, as they don’t imagine how long they will end up staying, these things has to be prepared by those who take the initiative. To inspire the friendly helping atmosphere the prices should be cost prices. And like with cars alcohol isn’t a part of the solution, so keep it away – you will get a lot of inspired party-like spirit anyway. It comes from the experience of a lot of people getting annoying problems solved ! – To meet the need of the smokers as well as the allergic people, have signs which shows the smokers where to go to smoke. It should be a place which air is apart from the place of the workshop-area.

  9. Responsibility
  10. It is not necessary that those who take the initiative know all about computers themselves. What is really important is that they voluntary are engaged both in the possibilities of the IT-revolution and in making a good society for everybody. Making use of IT for all kinds of people and saving them from all kind of beginner-trouble in the technology, while we collectively make the transition to the information society, should therefor be at the core of there engagement. They should have a stable and withstanding mind and be willing to use a lot of time and energy to organise things and make things succeed, without getting paid. It is crucial that they are humble and have the ability to make friends with everybody by virtue of a loyal, solidaric, friendly and helpful attitude towards all kinds of people. They should feel the problems of others to be their own and thence organise things until a solution is reached. They should be able to generate unconditioned respect from everyone through this attitude, and through their impressive resourcefulness and their practical organising abilities.

  11. Building society
  12. Those who take responsibility has to inspire those individuals in the local community who is most knowledgeable about computers, to get involved in the voluntary work for those in trouble at the computer-problem-solving workshops. It is of great importance that as many shoulders as possible is turned on the idea and become involved in carrying out the voluntary work and that is becomes organised on a rotation basis, so that it isn’t always the same few ones who carry the workload. The common ambition among those who involve themselves should be to build the ability to practical IT-handling in the homes, institutions, associations and all the different workplaces everywhere in the area, as Information Technology is the key to participate in society in the future world. Without it economy might fall apart.

  13. Solving all the problems is carried out simultaneously

When everyone attending a computer-problem-solving arrangement has got a place for their gear, the organiser of the meeting should call everyone to a short plenum-meeting in front of a blackboard. After telling about how everybody touching a computer gets trouble, he should ask who has a problem, and use one line on the blackboard for each problem. First in each line is put a circle, then the name of the person, then a description of the problem, and then some room to later put a name for somebody who will try to help. When everyone with a problem at the meeting has got it on the blackboard, the organiser should comment on the problems point by point from a common point of view. At each point he should also try to hear if there is someone in the assembly who has experience with that particular problem and know how to solve it. If a helper comes forward the organiser should put his name in the end of that line. If not he should put his own. When all with a problem has got a mate, the organiser should tell those with problems to later put a cross, in the circles in the start of their lines, when the specific problem is solved, or to put a minus if it is not solved. Now the organiser should state whatever news and the rules about cleaning etc. and ask for comments, before he breaks up the plenum-meeting. Everywhere in the workshop they now simultaneously go ahead solving whatever the problem. Everywhere everyone will be involved in testing, experimenting, learning, making solutions and mostly has a splendid time together. If a circle gets a minus the organiser has to arrange help from somebody else – at once or later.

COLLECTING COMPUTER-GEAR
The following document has been used to make people of Noerre Djurs give their used IT-gear away:

Bjarke Nielsen

Many other have helped to make this project work both i Lithuania and in Denmark

In Lithuania a similar group of five young computer-entusiast were formed from five different geographical areas. Each with the responsibilty to be the creator of a local computer-problem solving-network, inspired by the way things are done in Noerre Djurs. To study things on close hold the young Lithuanian group mentioned here above arranged to go to Noerre Djurs in Denmark. Before they left Lithuania they recieved the following plan for the visit from Denmark:

The Computer-Boevl-workshop

The Noerre Djurs Hall, Idraetsvej 2, DK8585 - Glesborg, Denmark

date: 3/8 - 2000

We welcome our guests from Lithuania !

In the week from monday 7/8 to sunday 13/8 2000 Noerre Djurs Web- & Computer-Boevl Network and Noerre Djurs Youth School & -Club is visited by five young people and two adults from Lithuania.

The occasion is the joint project to establish five non-commercial Computer-Boevl-workshops in Lithuania based on collected second hand computer gear from Denmark.

To get to know about  the inner workings of a Computer-problem-solving network all our Lithuanian guests are invited to participate throughout the week they visit Noerre Djurs, in all the different arrangements in The Computer-Boevl-workshop in The Noerre Djurs Hall.
(At least our guest ought to participate in all the evening-meetings to learn from their own experience how a computer-problem-solving network can work. But they are also welcome at any other open time throughout the week, - or at any time else, we might arrange, based on their own wishes).

A VISIT TO DENMARK
From the 7.th  to the 13.th of august 2000 this lithuanian group of 5 young people and 2 adults visted Denmark to meet the people of Noerre Djurs Web-& Computer-Boevl-miljoe.
Comming from each their region of Lithuania they had in common the wish to study how they might themselves create a similar computer-problem solving-network to that of Noerre Djurs, where all-sided friendship is the motivating force behind a huge activity for the preparation of the local community for the IT-age.
Time yet had to show whether it would be possible to build similar networks, based on all-sided friendship, in each their own area of Lithuania, like it already works in Noerre Djurs in Denmark.

A DANISH RE-VISIT TO LITHUANIA TO ESTABLISH IT-WORKSHOPSBrugte-PCere-lille.jpg (8523 bytes)
It was then decided that from the 14.th to the 20.th of october a danish group of 5 young people and 2 adults from Noerre Djurs Web-& Computer-Boevl-miljoe should visit the five areas of Lithuania. They had during a long period collected a huge amount of second hand IT-gear. They had gone over all the gear and selected and prepared the best for the five areas of Lithuania. The ambition was to give each of the areas 12 computers to be placed in a local workshop for everybody to use. Such a workshop should be organised democratically by the local users and serve as a beginning platform for the preparation for the IT-age, for the broader part of the local community.

THE STAY IN NOERRE DJURS
Well arrived in Denmark the Daily News on the local-area website, run by the Boevl-network, reported on the young lithuanians stay in the following news articles:
Unge fra Litauen besøger Nørre Djurs
Unge litauere modtaget på rådhuset
De unge fra Litauen i Bøvl-værkstedet

A GOOD GOODBYE FOR NOW
In the very late night, at the Extra Game- & Internet Café held in the Boevl-workshop for the benefit of the Lithuanian guests, by the end of the stay in Denmark, one of the young Lithuanian expressed the good and friendly feelings which had grown between hosts and guests during the week-long stay like this:

Hello everybody!

It's the first time I am in Denmark but I think I will arrive here more and more times. I had a very nice time here and I love this country because of some reasons. First, I was suprised about danish people who were very kind and open-minded for their guests. Second, I would like to say big "Thanks!" to Bjarke who's the leader and good fellow of the Internet centre and to other clever people like René, Mads etc. I with my friends expect you to see in Lithuania on October. I don't know what else to write just one more "Thank you! Thank you! Thank…you!…" ;)

This was Rocky ;)

GOOD BYE!

[….'cause now it is 6:30 am and he went to sleep.. ] :)

3) Do you - Eigil and Rima - take the initiative on thies matters around the transportation from the Boevl-workshop and on to the different places in Lithuania ?

4) As you may know it is the plan to pack up a container on monday the 25. of september between 19.00 and 22.00, which then is to be shiped immediately after !

5a) I owe all of you an explanation:

5a) Jeg skylder jer alle en forklaring:

5b) During their visit in the Boevl-workshop our lithuanian guests can't have avoided to wonder about the poor interest from the five young danes, with whom there had been made appointments to prepare and set up the five workshops in Lithuania and act as their distant-supporters.

5c) The lack of engagement culminated with the absence of all the five danes without apologies - despite the self-evidence in attending and appointments about it - during the visits closing extra Game- & Internet Café in honour of their young guests. Several failures of appointments had happened before, but here - sitting alone with our five young lithuanian guests during friday night - the chain seriously fell of for me as a project-leader. I simply would not travel to Lithuania with five young danes who missed their opportunity in the vital moments, and who did not feal commitment towards the project they had involved themselves in, and who on top of that acted against the natural logic of the project (and me) as a decided group. After having given the situation very deep thoughts, and after having found that the main source of the problems lies in the fact that groups as such in reality can't handle responsibility, because they don't have conciousness and conscience, only individuals have, I then on monday the 14. of august contacted each of the five young danes and made it clear that the socalled Young-group (consisting of the five, - with special responsibilities and privileges) after what had happened did not excist to me anymore - whatever their own opinion might be, and that appointments between me and the group up till now therefore neither excisted anymore, - but that we from my side was equally good friends and that new appointments could be made all over from the beginning between each of the young danes and me. I expressed that they might have underestimated the magnitude of the task and moreover that they might have taken upon their shoulders to many responsibilities in connection with the Boevl-networks many activities and that it was understandable if they had lost the passion. I asked each of them to think things over and I let them know that I intended to talk to each of them within a few days.

5d) During the following days I then recieved clear cancellings to the Lithuania-tour from the five, and in step with this I have asked other IT-skilled young people from the Boevl-network, whether they would go into finishing the work and travel along to Lithuania to help with the installation of the five workshops, in concordance with the original plan, - and in this connection I have got a very fine backing. But meanwhile all the five with whom the original appointments was made has cancelled their engagements. Michael and Martin though, will continue to give a hand with other concrete matters in the Boevl-network, but in a reduced degree.

5e) I honestly have to express that the five young danes who originally threw themself into the tasks with great enthusiasm, during a long time have performed a great voluntary work with many tasks in the Boevl-network. We are many who owe them our thanks for this. Now where the tasks have exhausted them in a degree that no one could foresee, and the passion has left them - and as a result they feel the need to withdraw from the many responsibilities, it is only fair that we praise them for their great effort in the different parts of the Boevl-network and also for what has shown to be a well-performed very demanding first phase of the Lithuania-project. They should only hear cordially thanks for their good contribution !

6a After the necessary reconstruction the team now concist of me and Lars Roenne Praest, Kasper Revsbech, Henrik Nielsen and René Vestergaard.

6b) At monday the 21. of august we had (with the exception of René Vestergaard) a meeting at the workshop to plan the continiuance of the Lithuania-project, and at that time we agreed on the schedule I wrote about in the newsletter from the 25. of august at 05.30 o'clock.

6c) Not to put orselves on time pressure at last, according to this plan we should make computers day and night from the beginning of the Boevl-evening on friday the 25. of august on to monday the 28.

6d) And now monday the 28. of august we have together bothered making the second hand gear since the Boevl-evening started friday the 25. of august (as local people with problems didn't show up). We have then been sleeping when needed on mattresses in the workshop until sunday evening.

6e) Henrik has been the most wild one of us, - as soon as he had been asked to help he immediately started to fix the gear. By now, that is, he has been in the workshop around the clock since the evening of tuesday the 22. of august and he has continued until I drove him home here by the night to tuesday the 29. of august.

6f) After the planning meeting last monday Henrik asked his friend René Vestergaard whether he would like to join the project, and René then came already late wednesday night, and also he has stayed in the workshop around the clock ever since, until he had to go home in the evening saturday.

6g) Lars and Kasper came friday evening as appointed and then had to attend to their jobs saturday, but they came back and continued in the evening. Lars then had to attend to his job in the daytime on sunday, but came back after closing time. Lars and Kasper then had to go home to do their homework and that sort of things in the late afternoon on sunday, as they were to go to school monday.

7a) And the wonderful thing after this Marathon-boevl is, that we by now through mutual help - and based on the former Young-groups very big work - has reached the magical number. We have just finished preparing computer number 60, as we had decided to reach by now !!!

7b) We will now go on and make a little extra machines for replacement for those that might be damaged during transportation etc.

7c) And in the comming days we will search for better machines in the gear we already have at the depot, and continously we will ask for better gear in our surroundings.

7d) We have also had time to start tidying up inside the depot, so that the other users of the sports center kan get their access to their athletics- and sportstools back. Also this we will continue to work on in the comming days.

8) Next time we are going to have Marathon-boevl, according to the plan the 8.-9.-10. and 11. of september, we will deal with the refinement through testinstallation of each of the five workshops, - one at a time.

9a) And then just one more question. Is it possible for us to set up the keyboards for Lithuanian in advance, during our testinstallations ?

9b) How do you do in Lithuania to get lithuanian letters in DOS and in Windows ?

9b) Hvordan goer I i Litauen for at faa litauisk tegnsaet i DOS og i Windows ?

9c) Do you fetch a special driver or are you just using a countrycode number and a keyboardlayout-number, as we do to get danish letters, - and if so what is the numbers ?

9d) And can you handle to make nice specialletter-stickers for the keys, with the backgroundcolor which is normal for keys ?

9e) If you need us to make them, we have to be forwarded an attached bitmap-file with (picture of) all the lithuanian specialletters in a high pixel-resolution. Remember that it should be the capital letters, as they happens to be on a lithuanian keyboard. You just enter a painting-program and choose the letter-tool, hit Capslock, choose black color and choose a big lettersize, and then you place all the signs that are special to lithuanian, - save the picture of the letters in a black and white file ans attach it to an e-mail for instance for me.

10) Warmth greetings from Bjarke :-) :-) :-)

Kaerlige tanker her fra Noerre Djurs i Danmark.

Bjarke  :-)  :-)  :-)
